The North Carolina coast’s most famous visitor didn’t come by RV, car, or plane. He was a murderous pirate captain who led the scurvies
t crew of cutthroats ever to sail the Seven Seas!
Yet justice caught up with Blackbeard in 1718. His lost his flagship, Queen Anne's Revenge, while trying to enter Beaufort Inlet, N.C. He died five months later in the bloody battle of Ocracoke. Tragically, he never really had time to appreciate the beauty of the northeastern coast of North Carolina.
Too bad.
He probably would have given it a 4-Arrrr rating! Today, Beaufort, Pamlico, Hyde, Pitt, and Craven counties attract throngs of tourists. Ol' Blackbeard himself is one of the reasons. The area is steeped in pirate lore. One of the biggest attractions is Ocracoke Island, the site of Blackbeard's famed death. Accessible only by water or air, the island is part of Hyde County.
The Cape Hatteras National Seashore, with the Pamlico Sound on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, encompasses 16 miles of sun-swept wilderness beaches. Blackbeard and his band of apscallions never had much time for swimming, fishing, surfing, or working on their tans. They certainly didn’t have the time for a candlelight cruise along the coastline. But if those activities appeal to you, this is the ultimate coastal destination.
What about golf? Well, the North Carolina coast has always been famous forb its hidden treasures. The 35 golf courses of North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands are among the region’s gems. Here in this area known as the "Golf Coast", our subtropical temperatures lure golfers back year after year, yet somehow the crowds and traffic always manage to vacation elsewhere.
Perhaps no place on the East Coast blends golf and nature more gracefully than Bald Head Island. The undulating greens on the course average a remarkable 11,000 square feet. And along with plenty of water – freshwater lagoons languidly snake around or through fourteen of the fairways – this George Cobb design offers golfers a rare surprise for a coastal course: elevation changes. The vertical drop from tee box to green on the signature par 3 16th, for example, is around 40 feet. Bald Head Island is also renowned for its turtle-preservation program, which can make for unforgettable sights for you and your family during nighttime strolls.
The British Cemetery, the Banker Ponies and dozens of unique shops provide visitors with more unique choices.
