Asheville - Blue Ridge Mountains

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains at the confluence of the Swannanoa and French Broad Rivers, the lively community of Asheville is a fun and relaxing vacation destination that offers the best of the great outdoors, art, and culture. Asheville is also rich with history, thriving as both the Buncombe County seat and the largest city in Western North Carolina.

Opportunities for outdoor recreation are endless in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Considered to be the outdoor playground of the Southeast, the Blue Ridge area offers everything from whitewater rafting, mountain biking, and hiking, to natural waterslides, skiing, and views of the highest peaks in the entire Eastern United States.

Due to its high location and 80 to 100 inches of annual rainfall, Asheville is a major hub of whitewater kayaking. Many kayak manufacturers have their bases of operation in the Asheville area, and some of the most distinguished whitewater kayakers live in or around Asheville. Ski season is also a busy time for Asheville as snow seekers come from all over to enjoy the slopes.

Downtown Asheville is easy to fall in love with, as it bustles with the energy of artists and street musicians, college students, friendly locals, and tourists alike. There is always something happening downtown, be it an art walk, an opening at one of downtown's 30-plus galleries, live music performances, or a lazy afternoon with a hot cup of independently brewed coffee with friends. Street performers entertain crowds on nearly every corner of downtown, so you'll never go without entertainment.

Downtown Asheville also offers visitors an interesting and enjoyable trip through history with its unique architecture. Asheville skipped the urban renewal process that stripped the character from many downtowns, and today is rich with an architectural legacy that reflects a mix of Art Deco, Beaux Arts, and Neoclassical styles.

Every street downtown leads to a treasure-trove of uncommon businesses that could only flourish in Asheville. There is a diverse mix of shopping malls and shopping districts, along with specialty stores like toy and children's shops and outfitters. Be sure to check out the fresh finds and local food products at some of the 45 farmer tailgate markets in the region.

Asheville is also home to a diverse music scene ranging from bluegrass native to the area, to major national acts, opera, ballet, country music and experimental jazz. Live music is a significant element of life in Asheville, from seasonal festivals to numerous nightclubs. Outdoor festivals, such as Bele Chere and the Lexington Avenue Arts & Fun Festival, feature local music, and one of the most popular annual events is "Shindig on the Green," which happens Saturday nights during July and August on City/County Plaza. By tradition, the Shindig starts "along about sundown" and features local bluegrass bands, dance teams on stage, and informal jam sessions under the trees surrounding the County Courthouse.

Finally, don't forget to lose yourself in the block-long Grove Arcade, a shopping and dining destination in one location. Built as a planned community in the late 1890s, Historic Biltmore Village features peddle-dash homes once belonging to George Vanderbilt and now features elegant restaurants, interesting boutiques, and one-of-a-kind galleries.
