Known as the fun and adventure capital of the Arizona White Mountains, Show Low is also the regional trade, commercial, and tourism center of the region. Established in 1870 and incorporated in 1953, Show Low is located in southern Navajo County, a convenient 175 miles northeast of Phoenix and 195 miles north of Tucson. Considered by its 7000 residents to be a very progressive community that offers a "Quality of Life Environment" while supplying its citizens with urban style amenities. Show Low is a wonderful Southwestern travel destination.
According to locals, Show Low received its name when C.E. Cooley and Marion Clark agreed to let a game of cards decide who was fit to stay in their settlement and who had to pack up and move out. According to the story, Clark said, "If you can show low, you win." Cooley turned up the Deuce of Clubs and replied, "Show Low it is." Show Low's rich heritage and intriguing history has since created a thriving town, brimming with attractions, activities, and amenities for its residents and visitors alike.
Many who know Show Low find that wildflowers, animals, and lush forests surround the city. Show Low offers many year-round recreational opportunities and beautiful scenery. The Apache Sitgreaves National Forest as well as the White Mountain and Mogollon Rim areas are just a stone’s throw for campers, fisherman, and hikers to explore and enjoy. The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests are truly an oasis from the heat and concrete of southwestern cities in the summer. The forest contains four National Recreation Trails, all of which provide beautiful vistas, varying physical challenges, and historical markers. Spectacular vistas from the Mogollon Rim and fragrant pine forests with an abundance of wildlife lure more visitors each year.
Boating and fishing are popular in many lakes and streams in the area, including Rainbow Lake, Show Low Lake, White Mountain Lake, and Fools Hollow Lake Recreational Area. Apache, Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni Indian Reservations are nearby, and Arizona's only covered bridge is located in Pinedale, just 15 miles west of Show Low. The city has a new indoor aquatic center, five 18-hole golf courses within 20 miles, and countless festivals and outdoor activities are always right outside your door, making Show Low's spot in the White Mountains an ideal RV and camping resort location.
