Centrally located in the agriculturally rich San Joaquin Valley, Modesto is proud to be "the city that greets you with a smile." Home to a populati
on exceeding 200,000, Modesto is the 15th largest city in California and serves as the seat of Stanislaus County, but is well-known for its old-fashioned hospitality and friendliness.
Life in Modesto is colored by the agricultural seasons. Beautiful orchards come into bloom in early spring, while during the harvest months of May through November the Modesto Farmer's Market and area produce stands are brimming over with fresh fruit, vegetables, and other seasonal goods. Dairy products, nuts, fruits, wine grapes, and poultry products are some of the top commodities in the Modesto area.
A main factor contributing to the area's great agricultural success is the mild climate. The pleasant weather is enjoyed by many outdoor enthusiasts year-round. River rafting, hiking, and jet skiing are area favorites, as are hiking, golf, and picnicking in Modesto's many parks. Modesto is also only a short drive from many of California's most popular destinations. The San Francisco Bay Area is only 90 miles from Modesto, and the Sierra Nevada Mountain range and Yosemite National Park are only about two hours away by car.
Modesto is home to a wide variety of attractions and seasonal events. Whether you're in the mood to browse the city's many museums and historical sites, do a little antiquing, or enjoy a night at the symphony or ballet, Modesto has you covered. You can spend an afternoon perusing the city's unique art galleries, see the animals at one of our zoos, or cheer on the Modesto Nuts at a minor league baseball game!
Modesto also boasts a bustling and family-friendly downtown where you can explore the pedestrian-only 10th Street Plaza, watch a flick on one of Brendan Theaters' 18 screens, enjoy a tasty meal, and hear live music during the summer months. There are also plenty of venues to hear live music and to see performances of all kinds throughout the city. Modesto's historic State Theatre, which opened on December 25, 1934, is now a recognized Landmark Preservation Site by the City of Modesto, and hosts a variety of live concerts, productions, and cutting edge independent films.
Modesto is also the birthplace of George Lucas and the inspiration for his popular film American Graffiti. Throughout the month of June you will find everything from street fairs to classic car parades, concerts, and showings of American Graffiti as we celebrate Graffiti Summer. You can also take a ride along the American Graffiti Cruising Loop on 9th and 10th streets between G and K streets any time of the year.
Whatever you choose, Modesto invites you and your family to enjoy all of the "Water, Wealth, Contentment, and Health" that Modesto has to offer.
